David Curington - Assured Listening Experience

experimental

The mystifying plunderphonics of Mancunian artist David Curington are spread across 26 minutes on the recent release "Assured Listening Experience". Like Ronseal Quick Drying Woodstain, it does exactly what it says on the tin, assuring a wonderous, if not confounding, listening experience full of botched samples, patient ambient soundscapes, and production legerdemain. Released on the Square Ears tape label, the triptych consists of three parts; the first is preoccupied with various types of prawns ("frozen prawns, not frozen prawns"). Never a dull moment, rarely a coherent one.

Mylar - Hobby Horse

alternative

London-based art pop group Mylar have announced their new EP Human Statues with the infectiously positive and uplifting single "Hobby Horse". Through retro sounds, crooning delivery, and a laid-back attitude capable of chilling a cucumber, the group inject a sense of joy into the listener's day with their wonderfully light-hearted yet intellectual brand of unique pop-as-abstract-expression art.

Chris Hyson - "Slow Thing" feat. Soren Bryce

electronic

London-based producer Chris Hyson weaves hypnotic threads of lush instrumentation and percussion on his recent single "Slow Thing". Featuring the gorgeous vocals of Soren Bryce, the song thumps in consistent four-four pulses but is given rhythmic anomalies and a manicured environment thanks to Hyson's sense of pace. While the saxophone usually blows the roof off a track, Hyson utilizes that instrument's sultry and sensual aspects, cleverly incorporating it into this patient, slow-burning, ultimately rewarding song. If this and other recent singles are anything to go by, Hyson's forthcoming collection will be his best.

Andy Loebs - Trolly Portal

experimental

Philadelphia-based multi-instrumentalist and producer Andy Loebs has announced that their new LP Hyperlink Anamorphosis will be released on March 24th, 2023, on Jolt Music. The bonkers and instantly likeable first single, "Trolley Portal", mixes 8-bit tones with Seinfeldesque bass slaps and early 00s software VSTs. It takes less than 2 and a half minutes to work its way into your conscious, disorienting with its invitingly playful stew of sounds.
